Senepol are a full Bos Taurus cattle breed: the result of a cross between African N’Dama and English Red Poll. The Red Poll cross polled the breed, lent a deeper red color to the coat, and improved disposition. The N'Dama cross allows today’s Senepol to thrive in tropical and semi-arid environments.

The Senepol breed, established on St. Croix in the early 1900s, was introduced to the U.S. in the 1970s, and in recent years has become one of the most sought after beef cattle in the ranching industry, particularly for Tropical and Sub-Tropical regions where heat tolerance is crucial.

CN6013 Caramba grazes contentedly on open pasture in dry arid conditions.
At Castle Nugent Farms in St. Croix, USVI, Senepol cattle gain weight steadily on dry pasture in arid conditions.

HIGH PERFORMANCE - Senepol cattle are fertile, grow quickly and are vigorous and robust animals. Calves are born active and hardy. High weaning weights are typical of the Senepol. High performance as indicated by EPDs equal superior production animals. back to top

HEAT TOLERANCE - N'DAMA HYBRID VIGOR- Senepol, although Bos Taurus, give the same hybrid vigor and heat tolerance as Bos Indicus composites – without the tenderness problems sometimes found in Indicus influenced cattle. back to top

GRASS FED, EXCELLENT BROWSERS - Bred and raised free range, Senepol is a breed that naturally thrives and gains weight in less-than-optimal grazing conditions. back to top

NO ASSIST, RELIABLE CALVING - Free range conditions have culled the breed to strong mother cows who calve vigorous healthy young, unassisted on pasture. back to top

Time for lunch. Senepol cows have extremely high milk production rates.

HIGH FERTILITY - Senepol cows can calve reliably and productively without complication for close to twenty years. Senepol milk production levels are so exceptional that they have been used as dairy cows in tropical climates, and Senepol have been crossed with Holstein to improve the tropical tolerance of that breed without loss of milk production capability. back to top

Coming in from up in Laprey Valley on St. Croix, these docile Castle Nugent Senepol are very agreeable to the suggestion of a walk.
Castle Nugent Senepol have been selected through the years for an easy, docile temperament. Bringing the herd in on foot through the bush is child’s play.

EASY TO MANAGE AND HANDLE - The polled trait plus a mellow temperament inherited from the Red Poll cross makes the Senepol a docile “easy goer.” Herding, inspecting, weaning, and other ranch chores are easy, even for a child. back to top

TENDER, LEAN BEEF - Popularity of Senepol beef continues to rise as health conciousness does; more people are demanding grass-fed, hormone-free low-fat beef that is naturally rich in flavor and nutrients. back to top

CN6013 Caramba in the pastures at Castle Nugent Farms, St. Croix US Virgin Islands
CN 6013 “Caramba” typifies the Senepol breed’s excellent performance.

Senepol bulls were used to improve heat tolerance in fullblood, registered and classified Holstein herds when heat and hurricanes made breeding performance drop to zero! After this trial, Senepol were used regularly with excellent results and became part of the management.

A Senepol / Holstein cross cow bears more resemblance to the Senepol, but with 95% black coat with some white patches on the belly. The performance of the Senepol in tropical conditions improved the success of this Holstein program.
